Seasoned Breadsticks

Seasoned Breadsticks, Hard to Resist!

Seasoned Breadsticks are good served as an appetizer, side dish or a snack.  When you bite into one of the breadsticks, you first taste the buttery seasoning on top of the crispy outer crust.  Next, you taste the chewy seasoned bread on the inside.  They are a bread lover's dream!  You might find them hard to resist!

The breadsticks are made from a seasoned pizza dough.  I added seasoning to the dough so that the breadsticks will have more flavor.  The seasoning in the dough can be eliminated if you prefer.

After you make the dough, let it rest so that it rises to almost double in size.   It usually take 45-60 minutes for the dough to rise.  Then, roll out the dough into a rectangle about 10x12-inches in size.

Then, cut the breadsticks into about one-inch wide sticks.  You will have about twelve 10-inch sticks.  I then cut the breadsticks in half so they are about five-inch sticks because I think they are easier to handle and eat when cut smaller.  You can cut the breadsticks into whatever size you prefer.

The dough can be rolled thinner for a crispier breadstick.  Jeff prefers a softer breadstick, so I roll the breadsticks to about 1/2-inch thick.  I have rolled the dough out to 1/4-inch thick.  You will end up with more breadsticks if you roll the dough thinner.  I prefer the thinner breadstick.

After the breadsticks are baked, I use a silicone pastry brush to brush them with a seasoned butter.  If you don't have a pastry brush, you can use a spoon to drizzle the seasoned butter over the breadsticks.  The seasonings in the dough are mostly the same seasonings that are used in the butter.  The butter includes parsley but the dough does not.

Serve the breadsticks served hot, warm or at room temperature.  They can be served with your favorite dipping sauce.  My husband prefers to dip the breadsticks into a marinara sauce.  I prefer the breadsticks without a dipping sauce.

This recipe makes more than what Jeff and I can eat with one meal, so we have leftovers.  I store the breadsticks in either a plastic container or a plastic storage bag on the counter.  They last us a few days.

If you prefer cheese on your breadsticks, check out my Cheesy Breadsticks recipe.  They are also made from pizza dough.

I hope you like the Seasoned Breadsticks!

Ingredients

Bread Dough

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 package active dry yeast or 2 1/4 teaspoons loose yeast
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 1 teaspoon granulated onion
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  • 2 3/4 - 4 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

Topping

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon granulated onion
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Breadsticks

  • In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Sprinkle sugar on top. Let the yeast rest 10-15 minutes or until the yeast starts to bubble and grow. If the yeast does not grow, start over with different yeast.
  • Add the salt, vegetable oil, garlic, onion and Italian Seasoning to the yeast. Stir to combine. I mix this recipe by hand, but you could use an electric mixer, if you prefer.
  • Gradually add the flour, about 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough is formed and no longer sticky.
  • Put the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. This step usually takes 10-15 minutes.
  • Lightly spray wax paper with cooking spray then cover the dough with the wax paper. Let rest for 45 minutes to one hour. The dough will almost double in size.
  • Lightly grease one or two baking sheets with cooking spray. Set aside. I need two baking sheets to fit all of the breadsticks.
  • Roll the dough into a 10x12-inch rectangle that is about 1/2-inch thick.
  • Cut the dough into ten 12-inch sticks then cut the sticks in half. You will have 20 5-inch sticks.
  • Place the breadsticks about 1/2-inch apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  • Cover the breadsticks with wax paper that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Let rest about 10-15 minutes. I preheat my oven while the breadsticks are resting.
  • Preheat the oven to 375F.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the breadsticks are lightly browned. If you like a crunchier crust, bake the breadsticks a little longer.

Topping

  • Melt the butter in a small bowl.
  • Add the garlic, onion, Italian Seasoning, Parsley and salt then stir to combine.
  • Using a pastry brush, brush the butter mixture over the hot breadsticks.
  • Serve warm.
